The Limit of Mind

Assalamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

The ability of mind is explained through two dimensions within Islamic thought.... The first one is through the Quran and the second is through the views of Muslim thinkers.

Quran

The mind although possess high intellectualism but it is still limited to the time and the space. Everyone should realize that they are bounded to this limitation. One would be a humble and a pious thinker when he realizes this since those who do not realize this would be arrogant and full of themselves. Knowing the position of mind which is weak and limited would attract one's awareness that not everything in existence could be assumed or be a subject of thought in human-mind.

Mind could only analyze, inquire, researching and understanding things related to physical realm. However, those related to metaphysical realm could not be reached with the mind of an ordinary being except through revelation or through the mediators among prophets and messengers of the God the Highest.

Among the verses which mentions that human mind is limited when it comes to the matters of the spirit which inhabits the frame of beings...
"They asked you concerning the Spirit (of inspiration). Say (Muhammad): The Spirit comes by command of my Lord: of knowledge it is only a little that is communicated to you!" (Surah al-Isra' 17:75).
In another context, human mind is so much limited that they could only create whatever is able through their mind and only with the permission of the God the Highest. No matter how smart or how intelligent the human, whether he is an individual or in a joined group of people but the space for human logical mind is still bounded to limitation as it is a subject to time and space.

The God the Highest challenged Arab scholars during the Age of Ignorance when the mocked the noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w on the truth of the revelation as compared to the ability of their limited mind...
"Say Muhammad: 'If the whole mankind and hidden creatures were to gather together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support'" (Surah al-Isra' 17:88).
Although with limitation in mind, man-kind is bestowed with the ability to analyze, to observe and to research things which could be reached with their mind and combined with their sensory tools. In this matter, the God the Highest through the Quran advises man-kind to analyze and to research physical matters around them so they would live a better life through their researches...
"Nor did We send before you as messengers any but men, whom we did inspire, living in human habitations. Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the end of those before them? But the home of the hereafter is best for those who do right. Will you not then understand?" (Surah Yusuf 12:109)
Muslim Scholars

Both Abū amīd al-Ghazali and Ibn Sinā believe that mind could only look up and comprehend physical realms that can be reached by their senses. So, the space of mind is actually quite limited since it could not dive deep into the facts which could not assumed and detected with senses.

This is argued through the evidence from the revelation which the God the Highest talks about His "Essence"...
"No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision: He is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things" (Surah al-An'am 6:103).
As the conclusion for this topic, the Iyā' 'Ulūmuddin by al-Ghazali mentions that mind needs evidences which could be assumed with mind and from the sources such as the Quran, the Traditions, and Deductive Analogy to draw conclusions.

To blindly following or to imitate an idea without using one's mind is an ignorance while the usage of only mind without the guidance of the Revelation (Light) and Prophetic Traditions is a lie. The usage of mind should be combined with the transportation (guidance) since the sciences related to the mind is the food while the sciences related to revelation and supplementary are the medicines which heals the problem in ones life.

Role of Mind

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

Mind plays its role to analyze everything through the humanity source angle. It covers material realm and those with material characteristics. In other conditions, the role of mind is perceived from the divinity source angle. This refers to the revelation, which transcends the metaphysical realm where this realm is beyond the boundary of human mind. Therefore, the source and the role played by human mind is something which is limited and bounded by certain limitation!

Other than that, mind does not hold its sanctity and purity forever. For that, it needs to be guided with the divine revelation. For us who are the Muslims, we view the role of mind with the Quran, the Sunnah and through the studies of our philosophers.

A. Quran and Sunnah

From the Quran which is our scripture, I found that it stresses the mind is something which plays the role to assist human-being in their quest to study something in depth. The God the Highest mentioned through the Quran that we have to use our mind with an optimum usage. We are encouraged to grab the opportunity to acquire every knowledge that we found in our way to reach Him.

Says the God the Highest

Indeed in the creation of heavens and the earth and the changing of the night and the day as the signs for those who possess the system of mind.

Surat Aali-Imran 3 v. 190

A such, our scripture itself opening up the space for human-being to find the knowledge and to study anything that they are curious to know. Whether it is in the form of those related to the daily life or the other knowledge related to our religious life and the hereafter.

Other than that, our mind is used to study, to analyze and to comprehend the revelation of the God. This is what that makes a human noble in his position and in the view of the God the Highest.

Says the God the Highest

O you who believe! When being said to you, "Give space in ceremonies", thus give the space may the God grants you more spaces. And when being said to you, "Stand up!", so stand you up may the God grants those who are faithful among you and those who are given the knowledge few levels above. And the God is the Most Proficient in what you are doing!

Surat al-Mujadilah 58 v. 11
Mind is among the reasons that human being convicted for their crimes or being trusted for the execution of the tasks or commandments. The mind which is not correctly directed and used without the Divine Path framework in the execution of responsibilities commanded by the God the Highest will be the factor for one to be tormented in the bitterness.

Says the God the Highest

And indeed We fill the abyss many of those among the genies and human-being who possess the heart but they do not comprehend with it and possessing the eyes but do not observe with it and for them ears but they do not listen with it. They are just like the cattle, even more strayed. They are among those who are negligent.

Surat al-A'araf 7 v. 179
As a point for the mind is a condition for conviction on crime or burden of responsibility, there was a saying from our noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w recorded by imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and imam al-Tirmidzie...

The pen is lifted on these three people, "On he who is sleeping until he is awake and on the child until he achieve his puberty and a crazy person until he is sane".

This is how we decide on our judgement as Muslim jurists when we judge in our court, we have our reference from the Quran, the interpretations from our traditions, checking the way of life of people around, making researches or inquiries and also we use our mind and considerations. This actually could go side by side with the civil court but I do not know... Those who talk about Shari'a Islamiyya or simply the Divine Path of the God in negative sense perhaps do not even know about Legal Studies or maybe they know "a little" about it but their heart is not clean so they distort things or refuse to check further to discuss instead they love to argue, to debate and to prove their ego. They feel satisfied when they win. I always laugh at this kind of people because I found that they are pathetic. They argue like attorneys in the court but they are not even an attorney to begin with nor they study about crimes or law of acts and effects. Egoism, selfishness or self-center are the same trait that leads one into ignorance and spiritual darkness.

The mind is the source which plays the role for one to know his "True Lord", whether through His characteristics or through His creations.

Says prophet Muhammad s.a.w...

Think with the creations of the God but never with His Essence since you will never reach its proportion!

For the people of Ancient India, those who knows the Supreme Authority are known as the Brahmanas. English translation always distort the sound of Brahmanas into Brahmins. A Brahmana is one who is free from illusions, free from the ordinary nature of births, free from material values and free from the effects of jealousy, boasting, arrogance, treachery and behave with 12 behaviors beginning with self-control or tranquility apart of it is a caste by family classification as everyone commonly gets the idea about. This one is from our philosophical studies were we open up the texts from the original sources and checking commentaries or interpretations. In Arabic, we have several terms too like 'Aleem, 'Ulama' and 'Areef. The third term is a a little to the portal of metaphysical world which I think is somehow closer to Brahmana in some parts of their connotation and yet I do not like to elaborate much about this as I think it is important to be clear with our basis. Just an idea which sparks out while checking the points...

Later on, the mind has a positive role where it helps a person to evaluate between good and evil. If one does not know on how to evaluate between the good and evil, then he needs to direct his own mind so he will have the effort to ask to those who are knowledgeable.

Says the God the Highest

And We never send any messenger before you, except that they are among the men whom We revealed to them. So, ask those who are knowledgeable if you do not know!

Surat al-Nahl 16:43
So, when we do not know, we go and see teachers. The same thing too, if we do not know about anything say about Islam and we wanted to talk like we know. First of all, we go and see teachers and get their feedback on what we are curious about. By relying on secondary resources only is not sufficient. It is like we are doing our inquiry for our academic research where we go and do some field-work, having some methodology in our research and curiosity and we never say that our findings are the most correct when we could only produce some writings out of things which we could not simply explain by words. How are we going to describe our feeling correctly in words? How about the touch or emotion? How about psychological condition of one? Even if we do some interviews, could we get sharp answers like we do simple mathematics?

B. Muslim Philosophers

We have both philosophers of different Islamic schools of thought. Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali who is a Sunnah Muslim and Ibnu Sina who is an Ismai'li Shi'a Muslim on the role of mind. Both of them agree that mind plays important role for those who are studying something or those who are curious about something. That is why mind plays a role as a source of knowledge. They both agree that mind has the role to elevate a human-being to a better and appraised position. This matter is in accordance with the fact and reality, where those who possess knowledge will be respected in a community or society.

Mind has the role to make human-being think and conducting research. Later, they could get ideas or differentiate on the positive and negative ones. The ability of the mind and its role should actually make the men administrating the Earth and to prosper with it. Not to kill each other. So, what happens in the Middle East? In Africa? In other regions in the world? Why is people killing among each other while they call themselves as Muslim? Is it because of egoism? Is it because of the lack of knowledge? Is it because of selfishness? Is it because people do not get even knowledge that there are many kind of interpretations? What happen with their "religion"?

Facts of Mind

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

Scholars and scientists are not in accordance when explaining the fact of mind. In my notes here, I have two proposed opinions from Muslim scholars pertaining the topic who are:

A. Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Ghazali
B. Al-Harith Bin Asad al-Muhasabi

A. Imam al-Ghazali

He explains the fact of mind through four definitions. Mind differentiate man-kind with animals and other creatures. With mind, human-being could accept knowledge in the form of theory and observational view or arranging their ideas. Mind in this form is the main essence for human-being thought. The fact of mind according to this definition could be explained through the hadith of prophet Muhammad s.a.w by al-Tirmidzi narration which means, "none other of the God's creatures which is noble in His view except the mind".

Mind is a knowledge which could bring a confidence on possibilities on what would happen on what is possible or impossibilities on what would never happen on the possibility. For e.g, our mind could not accept on two things happening in the same time like sitting or standing in the same time. This form of mind is the fraction and the closest branch for the mind as the previous mentioned definition.

Mind is all the knowledge which a human have got through his experience and he had faced in his life. It is based from the statement that, an experienced man is a mindful man. A person without any life experience is known as an ignorant. This form of mind is the fraction of the previous two forms of mind.

Mind is something which has the strength or a strength which one has gotten due to the development of the instinct. Due to the instinct is at its peak, one's mind has an ability to detect the consequences of his acts or from all the matters. On the other hand, mind could prevent, control and constrain desires on  temporary pleasure or the pleasures that would perish after their time ends. A person is counted as mindful when he could control and prevent his self from being controlled by his desires. This form of mind is the development of the previous three mentioned forms of mind. It is the highest development in achieving the goal of life.

This latter form of mind is described by noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w from the narration of Abu Darda'...

"Increase your mind, may you be closer to the God. Then Abu Darda' asked the noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w, "By my father and mother, how could I achieve that?" Prophet Muhammad s.a.w answers, "Stay away from His prohibitions and hold fast His commandments upon you, may you be a mindful person and be steadfast in charity may your position be higher and noble in the hereafter closer to your Lord".

As the conclusion from the forms of mind made by imam al-Ghazali rahimahullah, the first and second forms refer to the natural form of a human-being mind. The third and fourth form refer to the development of mind as a result from his struggles and effort.

B. Al-Harith Bin Asad al-Muhasabi

Mind is an instinct, nature and natural fact exists in a human-being. Human-being learn sciences and getting knowledge with the help of mind. Mind is a preparation for a human-being in order to learn and comprehend phenomenon surrounding him. It is like a light being cast into the "heart" of a human and with it, he is guided by the God.

The weakness of human-being mind which hinders him to achieve the "fact" about the God is a form of disability. It shows that a human-being mind is still bounded to limitation. It is limited in its task. However, this limitation does not hinder him from using specific methods in deciding the qualities and being closer to the God through His creations. The qualities of the God are mentioned in the scripture while being different from His beings'. What could not be achieved by our limited mind is the "Essence of the God". This has been described in the hadith...

"Think about the creations but never about His Essence as you will perish!"

Uniqueness of Mind

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

The God the Highest mentions for many times as recorded in the Glorious Quran as the word "mind" occurs for almost 50 times. It shows on the higher position of mind and how noble it is. Says the noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w in a hadith:

"The first thing created by the God is the mind and He commanded him to come, so do it comes. Then the God commanded him to go, so do it goes off. Then, the God says to the mind, "As for My Greatness and Glory, none among My creatures who are as noble as you in their creation. With you, that I give and with you that I take. With you that I reward and with you that I torment!"". - Narrated by Thabrani

The hadith actually reminds me of the recitation of Brahma Puran by Brahmins. Purana is a kind of gospel for Hindus. It says about the first creations, second creations and so on. Mind was also mentioned in Vedic literature as Manas. There are many definitions about Manas from the basic system of human physics to the spiritual ones. Mostly, it is just the same with our notes in the definitions. If I put them here, perhaps they would be developed into thesis. Only for the mind.

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w also says from the report of lady 'Aisha r.a: "I said to prophet Muhammad s.a.w, "Dear messenger of the God, what makes human-being different to each other in their ranking in this world?" Says he, "With the mind". I further asked, "What about in the hereafter?" Aren't human-being would be rewarded according to the degree of their acts and practices?". He answered, "Dear 'Aisha, weren't they act as according to the degree of their mind as it is granted by the God to them. So, as according to the degree of their mind that they would be rewarded as their acts follows their thought".

Mind in Indian Philosophy

This is my understanding as for non-Islamic thought. It is of Hindu thought for spiritual principles understanding. I am not good in Greek philosophies but for Hindu and Buddhist ones I could say that I am quite familiar as I learned Yogacara and other disciplines which actually would make other people run away from me as I tried to understand myself and the realms around me. This is the result of the Clash of Civilization, haha...

There were two ancient philosophies which was the best in the world and they are the Indians and Greeks' philosophies. There is this concept in Indian philosophy known as Ahamkar. It means making ourselves as I am or simply as ego. The Ahamkar is of three components which are the Manas, Cittam and Buddhi. Buddhi means the manner or awakening mind, Cittam means anxiety, and Manas simply means mind or thinking. These has to do with previously post of mine talking about Attman

As for Manas, it is known as the lower or instinctive mind, it is the seat of desire, the governor of sensory and motor organs known as Indriya. Manas is categorized as the undisciplined and empirical mind. It is characterized by desire, determination, doubt, faith, lack of faith, steadfastness, lack of steadfastness, shame, intellectual and fear. It is a faculty of the lower astral or instinctive-intellectual sheath known as Manomaya Gosha. Manas is the center for Ahamkara. It is the field of self-consciousness play and the illusion of separate self. This one is part of Indian Theosophy thought. All of these term could be founded in Vedic Indian scriptures while there are also explanations and views from various schools of philosophies within Indian religions.

As for the hadith reported by our lady 'Aisha r.a, I understood the acts and practices as the karma. Karma means the act which would cause something to further happen. When we stop our acts, the effects stop. When we move our act, the effect to ourselves and beings in the universe would also moves. It does not really means fate. When we commit evil act, we or our environment receive evil impacts. Evil impacts would lead us to hell and torments. When we perform charity, we receive the good effects physically or psychologically. It does not have to be in term of material reward but also in term of punyyam or meritorious pahala. The reason for karma to happens is rooted from the mind. I tried to simply explain to people by using these concepts but without those terminological Sanskrit terms or Arabic. However, I guess not all people could understand it. People with "dark" mind would cause the surrounding dark. People with chaotic mind would lead the world into chaotic situation...

Mind as A Burden of Responsibility

Based from the hadith narrated by Thabrani as reported by our lady 'Aisha r.a, it is stated that a sane mind is a condition for a person to be held responsible for his acts. This is also a principle in general law which could be founded in the court around the civilized world. Mind held a person responsible in his creed and acts of worship. Thus, with mind too... Man-kind are free to choose their own path, whether to be ingrates or faithful. There is no compulsion in choosing the path as the righteous and erroneous path had been clearly mentioned in the scripture as what we always recite just after our salat services in our litanies....

Says the God the Highest, "No compulsion in the divine law. Indeed the Guidance has been clarified from the cancelled ones..." - Surat al-Baqarat 2:256

The verse implies the importance of the mind for man-kind to choose on which paths that they wanted to be committed. It serves man-kind as a bridge to bring them toward the "Truth". Now, please don't misunderstand me. I am not trying to promote people to leave behind their religion for Islam if they are non-Muslims. I sincerely never have such thought. I believe in the Guidance as what has been mentioned in the verse. I hate preachers myself because most of them were just talking and talk but they never walk their talk. Their speeches would go against them in the hereafter and they had make their "religion" so cheap as if it is lower than a bitch.

Islam is not a fascist thought and it has nothing to do with modern world scholars. I feel weird when people today classifying ancient people as communists, socialists, fascists and others while the terms never exist in ancient times or in the region where those people had risen. They exist after the World Wars in 19th century. If we believe in the freedom of thought, why are we classifying everything as according to our way of thinking? Our path never encourages us to follow anything blindly, accept anything nor blindly supporting anything without any discreet research or posing inquiries especially in the matters of Creed. Those who could not use their "mind" could be followers as their mind perhaps is weak in order to find the evidence and proofs. For that, pure nature of free mind must be directed toward the seeking of "Truth".

The freedom and the nature of mind could sometimes being bounded by time and space, thus it needs for the guidance and lead. Man-kind are weak and full of mistakes. So, logical science would be a best compliment for everyone with the company of religious sciences and other sciences. Logical science is a method and a rule to control human thought. Logic could prevent a person from committing errors or mistaken in their thinking manner.

Ibnu Khaldun in his al-Muqaddima mentions that human-being sometimes achieving the goal in their thinking and with it they reached precise results. However, there are times too that their thinking could slip away from the track. Due to that, it is important to control our mind and directing it toward the right results. Logic is the studies of which one is right and which one is wrong.

Characteristics of Mind

The nature and the gift of mind shows that man-kind are weak and shallow in their knowledge. Scientists since the ancient of the most ancient times could not decipher nor particularly explain on what is the fact of mind. This clearly shows that not everything in this existence could physically be seen nor being proved on its existence. Not to say, if a human desires to think about the concept and the essence of the Creator the Highest which would never be achieved by their limited mind.

In other context, mind is a character and a nature of man-kind which is in parallel to their creation. Mind is a part of human fact as a creation. Thus, a mindless human although is perfect with body parts would not be counted as a complete human. For e.g, an insane guy would never be sentenced on his acts whether in any term such as in his intention, verbal acts or oral as according to general law.

Nature and the characteristics of human's mind are positive. Mind could lead human-being toward goodness and development physically or spiritually. This positive nature of human-being's mind is in parallel to the origin of human-being creation, pure and clean. Both the characteristics of mind and its nature should be consistent with the nature of faith while the purity should be in accordance with the Divine Path. The positive traits of mind could be benefited as maximum as it can in order to strengthen the faith through scientific methods and logic with the help of Divine Path.

The positive nature of mind and the pure faith would be tainted if not guided by the Divine Path or when being used in opposite to the goal of Divine Path. The mind would later be polluted and deviating from the truth. Among the factors of a filthy mind are following the longing of evil desires, polluting oneself with sins or the weakness of faith.

On the other hand, though mind as per its nature is pure and positive, but it is not equal to the "nature". It is due to that, mind plays the role to bring a human-being to a certain fact, stage by stage. When it reaches the stage only, it would experience tranquility and achieves its peak as its necessity is fulfilled.

Definitions of Mind

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

Definition of Mind

In Arabic, we call the mind as 'aql. What I understood about the mind? This is just my personal understanding based from my notes or experiences related to the philosophical and metaphysical part of Buddha's teachings. It is a non-physical phenomenon which perceives, thinks, recognizes, experiences and reacts to the environment. It is described as possessing two main aspects...

The first one is the clarity and knowing which means that the mind is clear and formless where it allows for objects to arise in it. The second one is the mind is knowing, or the awareness of mind when the mind is conscious and it could engage with objects. Basically mind is a phenomenon which is not body, not substantial, no form, no shape, no color but like a mirror as it clearly reflect objects.

Mind consists of two types... Conceptual and non-conceptual. The conceptual one refers to normal mind aspect that beings use to survive in daily life but is ultimately mistaken about as the way which reality exists. The non-conceptual mind which is known as enlightened nature is the fundamental pure nature of mind where it realizes the emptiness. This is what I read in the Astrachakram poem by father Serlingpa who is a Malay Buddhist monk of the 10th century Srivijayan empire. Weird it is, huh... I am an Arab descent but learning the heritage and wisdom which was possessed by Malay Buddhist monks and Malays were propagated toward Islam by our ancestors and people along with other nations at the coastal areas, hehe : )

To study the mind and to train it with wisdom requires the uses of conceptual mind. For e.g preparing the mind before the underlying non-conceptual enlightened nature of the mind may appear. I learned about delusions where we need to diminish and eventually even eliminate it forever for spiritual progress... There is a saying by a philosopher of the middle path school of Buddhism known as father Nagarjuna which says that without the discipline of guarding the mind, what use are any other disciplines? Which means that guarding the mind is a part of the vast disciplines practiced by the beings...

What are the definitions of mind according to Islamic framework... Mind is crucial and essential for human being. With it, they could differentiate their selves with the beasts and other beings. There are at least three definitions posed in the notes that I have...

1. The Dewan Bahasa dictionary defined the mind as thinking activities and the level of human-being's intelligence.

2. Al-Manzur mentioned in his lexicon the Lisaan al-'Arab that mind refers to the intelligence.

3. Al-Muhasabi defines the mind as a natural characteristic of human-being and their ability to understand something.

The conclusion made by some people is that, mind is the essential nature and the main concept which makes them responsible with the "burden" and conditions as a sane human-being. Mind is among the greatest grace and blessings of the God to human-being. It is considered as a trust just like other graces of the Lord.

The Concept of Mind

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

Introduction

This concept is actually familiar to me since I was a little child. I was exposed to both Islamic and Hindu-Buddhist way of thinking. It is not only about the thinking but also cultural traits and practices. Basically, I am not the kind of young people who only live a life for the sake of living. Both of the religions are of my experience as a confused boy who has nobody to be his companions, lack of love either of family or friends and most of the times secluding his self from crowds pondering about what happens around. I am so sorry if I do not do a writing like a so-called "salaf" Muslim but I could assure everyone that my religious practices are strictly orthodox and I never talk like this in front of people because I only talk according to people's level of thought. I respect the salaf al-saleh teachers and I also respect the tabi'in generations. I keep all of their books and remarks besides trying to practice them too.

Most Muslim who discussed about philosophies always talk about Greco-Roman philosophies as what I heard in the discussion broadcasted in Malaysian Islamic Understanding Institute (IKIM) radio with someone who was involved with the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC). I would like brothers and sisters to know, there were Buddhist Greeks as well as Eastern Asian Buddhists due to the existence of Indo-Greek kingdom of Bactria since before the Christ era. They propagated Buddhism teachings and philosophies as far as Alexandria or Iskandariyya in Egypt. I am not talking about Islam or Muslim yet till now.

Buddhism always talk about human personal experience which is framed in the pancha skandhas or five aggregates term. Then there are three marks of existence known as dukkho (unsatisfactoriness), anittiya (impermanence) and anattman (non-self). The chattwari ariya sattiyani or the four noble truth which discussed about what is meant by dukkho? Where does dukkho come from? There is a way that dukkho could be banished through the knowledge about the theory of pratitschasamudpad or dependent arising. They could be found in the atthangiko ariya margg or the eight noble path proposed by Siddhartha Gautama which are subbed into three categories which are the panna (wisdom), sila (ethics and morality) and smathi (concentration). In order to banish negative effects around the environment, Buddhism basically emphasizes mind training to perform our life where it is like we change polluted water with the clean and clear one through flushing it or flowing it with the clean one. The concept of self is connected to the mind and acts.

The positive or negative effects toward the environment which is known as the space partly comes from the mind activities of beings or creatures. Many people says that Buddhist do not believe in the metaphysical matters. It is a wrong assumption. Buddhists have three pitakas or baskets of teaching. The first one deals with the actions, meditation, breath handling and mindfulness of body. The second one, talks about disciplines. While the third and the last one deals with metaphysics and philosophies. The third basket was also taught to "angels" by Siddartha Gautama when he reached the enlightenment. The enlightened Gautama never talks about the Supreme Power as it was important for him at his time to correct the moral and attitude of the people around him. People already know about the Highest Self yet they behave like people who knows Him not. Those are just the basis.

There are many things to be learned before commenting and only if we are Buddhists ourselves. But I always encounter some fellow Muslims who talk like they know everything about other religions and views, but in reality they just check the facts at the surface. They never experience anything as per being an "infidel" or being rejected by their own community thus having to find their own way to return through His Mercy, hehe.

Islamic Concept of Mind

Now when we talk about the mind in Islam, human is deemed to be higher and special as compared to other creatures. What makes human special? They have choices in their life and it comes from their mind and thoughts. With mind, man could find knowledge and it leads human toward the better. It helps man to distinguish between evil and goodness. Deviation and annihilation is due to that man-kind did not using their faculties of mind for good purposes. So, a positive mind which is used for positive concerns would escalate a human to a noble position. But when the mind is wrongfully used for vices and evil, man-kind would fall into disdain and destructed.

Our noble Quran mentions so many times about mind. It mentions that with mind, human could think about the creations of the God, learn about them, finding knowledge and strengthen the faith to Him. Through the guidance of the noble scripture, human who thinks could sort out the sciences in the creations of the God throughout the space.

The God the Highest mentions through the tongue of our noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w which means: "And from the dates and grapes, you made them sweetened drinks and legal sustenance. Indeed, in those are the signs for the people who possess mind". - Surat al-Nahl 16: 67

When man-kind using his mind toward evil and vices, he would fall into the destruction and tormented with bitterness from the God. The God mentions through our noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w which means: "And when you call them toward the prayers, but they mock it and teasing it. It is due to that, they are the people with no mind". - Surat al-Maa'ida 5:58

Through faculties of mind, man-kind could search for the guidance and "truth". Thus, choosing the better one while leaving behind evil matters. Although man-kind posses mind and intelligence besides using them for daily affairs yet the result of their thoughts do not always in accordance to the real objective or achieving the aimed goal.

Only prophets and His messengers are protected in their speeches and thoughts. They are protected from errors and deviation of the truth whether in the earthly life or in the matter of hereafter. For example, prophet Muhammad s.a.w was actually threatened by the God that His angel would strangle him if he distort the message that the God ordered him to articulate and not even to think about it. So he talks only according to the revelation of the God. Normal man-kind would commit errors in their thinking, speeches, in their decision or in the execution of their acts. That is due to the weakness of their mind and the lack of knowledge.

The God says which means: "... and you are not given the knowledge except a little of it". - Surat al-Israa' 17:85

For example, if a man looks at the thick black cloud up the sky, he would be thinking or expecting that the rain would soon be pouring down. But that is just an assumption of his mind based on his analysis to the factor of the black cloud. It is just a hypothesis. Sometimes the result would be true and sometimes it would be wrong. It is due to that sometimes, there are black clouds in the sky but rain are not falling down to the earth.

Islam prohibits man-kind to think with the mind which is not followed by the the Creed and the Guidance. It also prohibits the thought according to one's desire. Example for the people who think in the manner that is prohibited by the "Divine Way" are the Sophists. They evaluate good and evil based only on the senses and mind. They only used rhetoric and philosophy to explain or framing the affairs and matters around them. "Ordinary" human senses and mind are limited and bound to weaknesses. Their senses and mind could not reach metaphysics and supernatural realm.

The difference and the higher position of man-kind as compared to other creatures in the Earth for example, the genies or the animals is their faculties of mind granted by the God to them. They could think and ponder deeper than other beings. In Buddhism, the highest incarnation of beings to achieve "final blast" into the "new world" is also in the form of a human. Not in the form of angel nor any other form.

Humans were trusted by the God to be the administrators in the earthly realm, to prosper the Earth and holding the responsibility to keep His commandments but to avoid His prohibitions. Says the God which means: "And when your Lord said to the angels, indeed I made in the Earth the successors. The angels said: 'Are You creating in the Earth those who would commit destruction in it and those who would spill the blood while we are glorifying You with the praises for You and sanctifying You. The God says, I know the things that you do not know!" - Surat al-Baqarat 2:30

My Further Comments

Well, if it is related to philosophies or other regional cultural traits. I am not really good in Greeks' sciences. I live in South East Asia though my ancestors were the Arabs and they were also stationed in Indian sub-continent. When I was schooled in the madrasa, it was at the border states of Malaysia and Thailand. And I was and still is an adventurous soul. I love to travel around and listening to religious teachings.

Because I had no close friends nor companions as I am a very choosy person in making friends... I went to Buddhist monasteries and making friends there. I also make friends with the environment around which also include other creatures that some people would call them as the ghosts, hehe. I learned Sanskrit and Pali from around besides Arabic at our school because the school is a religious school.

Language is actually the most basic tool for sciences and technology. This is what those who always talk about branches of sciences do not understand. They just understood that mathematics and those sciences such as the basic biology, astrology, chemistry or physics as at the core matters which makes me laughing my a*ss when I began to realize about the facts of life, LOL...  Anyway those sciences are categorized by Imam al-Ghazali rahimahullah as pseudo-sciences. He also learned philosophies and the rhetoric where he encountered Ismaili Shia Muslims in Central Asia who were also of Mu'tazila schools of theology.

The words such as caliph and others could be founded in cognitive with other ancient languages such as Sanskrit. For example, I would translate caliph as chakravarttin in Sanskrit where it means the ideal universal ruler. Other than that, I found that most Malay writers or translators of the logic text books for Usooluddin students always placing the Arabic terms on the place where it is not necessary. People in South East Asia also talk about Roman or Greek but Sanskrit or Pali also houses a large corpus of sciences like those of Greek.

The Eastern philosophies and sciences also deal with human mental states, environment and psychology which the Western were lacking. While South East Asian languages for example Malay or Cambodian also absorbed large amounts of Sanskrit terminologies. Is this about class because Sanskrit is not the language of the European Union or because the so-called brainy Jew, Einstein lives in Germany? Or because most of "Muslim scholars" in  the Middle East or Central Asia during the Middle Ages era reading Greek of Latin books so we have to just copy-paste their ideas to be like them?

Why can't we be ourselves? Are we lack of confidence in our selves that determines us to copy-paste other and thinking that we are intelligent with good head? Just a food of thought anyway, hahaha....

Sealed with prayers for mercy, peace and love, amin!

Western Influence: Western Ambition which Long Lying Dormant

Assalaamu'alaikum wa rahmatullah

I had checked about this small book. There isn't much can be founded online. Maybe the title in English is different. It's ok I can still briefly do some translation for benefit of Muslim nations in the East and in Eastern Europe who speak English only for the God pleasure. Please don't look down on English as a medium. It's now an effective medium compared to French. God saves the Queen, hahaha!

This is the first part of the book. It also mentions something about Protocols of Zion and I will comment about it after I put up the points written by the writer of the book regarding the matter as I don't like forgery. We talk with academic capacity and we are not American conspiracy theorists. Conspiracy theory has no basis in Social Science and academic tradition.

After a year learning Social and International studies with all of the difficulties facing these chaotic Western thoughts, I found that every Muslim must have these lessons in their selves even if they do not talk much. We must be aware about what we talk. As a confused Muslim boy who had been involved in Buddhism teaching, I always have this in my mind where it comes from wisdom speeches of lord Buddha as one of teachers that I had ever have. If I talk without awareness, then my speech should be dumped into the thrash can.

Even if it is coming from Talmud which is influential in Judaism law... I would avoid from being dishonest because it is not the morality of noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w. He is an honest person who speaks the Word of the God. The God is not like human-being or our schoolmates who are crazy : ) Man without pure mind could not be a person who speaks His Word... It also shows we don't simply absorb everything that we read but we have our own filters... We don't stop at one side but we also read in many angles, we don't simply agree with everything that we read : )

1. Western Ambition which had Long Lying Dormant

Say the writer, there is an alarming efforts trying to reject that there are movements which lead global toward Westernization, cultural colonization, activities to assimilate Islamic thoughts into foreign thoughts, and holding up high the coming thoughts created by the West.

These efforts trying to expound arguments in two manners:

1. The opinion which questioning on where are those institutions known as the "Westernization Institution"? In fact, there is no such institution and it has no proper building with signboard displaying such words "the School or Foundation for Westernization." Thus, this question raised is a shallow question from those with shallow mind. For these groups of Westernized people assumption, they are good and useful agents of the West who served the movement without any payment and they are sincere toward the West.

2. The discretion of Western stooges in hiding their loyalty to their movement makes it easier for them to deceive human-being as a whole.

It is so disappointing that, those who instil doubt on the Westernization movement are of the first group. Their heart and observation was closed. Westernization movement nowadays is not a secret anymore. It is not something which is undeniable. It is perhaps something that can be denied in the past 30th century where our Arab nation were in the dark age. Nowadays, many things are doubtful for example, the Protocol of Zion which had been widely spread all over the world around 1902. It was prohibited from entering the Middle East except in 1952 after the establishment of Israel as a modern country in the middle of Arab countries.

The secret had been opened up by its own supporter. The book "Towards Islam" written by Hamilton Gibb together with other Orientalists is among important documents in relation to this matter. Gibb had obviously mentioned the purpose of researches being conducted is to decipher on how far Westernization impacted Muslim nations. It is portrayed in his statement as below:

"How far is the Westernization affecting and what are factors which preventing it from achieving its objective. It is important so that immediate actions could be taken for the objective to be achieved."

Readers of the book could obviously get to know the effects of Westernization movement. It is like an arrow which rushed into the eyes of those deflected where it will cover their heart with ignorance. Researchers who emerged after the period had also explained this fact more precisely and they also have their own documents and notes for references. These facts could also be founded in books written by Dr. Umar Farukh and Dr. al-Khalidi entitled "Missionary and Colonization." Those from the West also had written about the issue in the book. For example, Toynbee in his book "the World and the West."

In this regard, there are many evidences which could eliminate all of the doubt for those who intend to seek truth and for those who has no crooked intention in order to stop from serving the leaders of Westernization movement such as national movement or party based on racial as such being written by scholars of cultural colonization movement.

Those who had ever read this book titled "The Attack on Islamic World" which had been published earlier than of Hamilton Gibb's and was translated by Dr. Muhibuddin al-Khatib in al-Moaiyid few years before 19th century had explained the determination of Westerners. The book had explained what had long been dormant in these people which is to dominate the world and it is something which should be achieved. Besides, they also had stated methods in executing their mission which had been divided into few institutions for example educational institutions such as school and university, missionaries, mass-media such as journalism or publishing. There are also other institutions such as literature and art, drama, theater, movies, and broadcasting.

There is no need for other evidences to confirm that there are Westernization movements which are supported by cadres and writers who are creeping around the world. Anyone who had joined any meeting organized by them through influential news agencies will found that those mentioned matters are obvious. Hence, there is no need for new evidences in order to enlight those who were lied. It is because they are determined with deep feelings to be blind followers to racial writers. These people are just like fragile rotten fruits produced by old hideous trees.

Those who analyzed and observed activities of missionary organizations, oriental studies foundation, and confusion raised by these two institutions could be more than confident that there are Westernization movement in all of the time.

The definition of Westernization which could be understood from dozens of definitions forming new streaming of thought. It is based from the concept and values of Western thought. It is later becoming the benchmark for other thoughts and values around the world. Its aim is to make Western cultural traits and values being regarded highly exceeding those of other nations. Most of the time, they keep attacking cultures of Muslim nations. (Later when they found that Islam has nothing to do with cultural traits, they would bend it to other things. It shows that they hate the God because Islam is One of His Glorious Names).

Christian missionaries and Orientalists ever stated their ambition and objective is to create a new generation who would feel disgusted with Islamic values, those who low-esteem oriental values and thoughts, and working hard in preventing Islamic elements of morality and devotion to the God from entering educational institutions. The supporters of Westernization movements trying hard to pulverize Islamic figures such as prophet Muhammad s.a.w through finding the flaws of his characteristics, trying to demonize companions of Muhammad s.a.w, overshadowing Muslim philosophers of prophetic traditions with other extraordinary figures such as al-Hallaj, al-Sahruwardi, Bashar, al-Rawandi and many others.

These efforts (their jihad for their own satisfaction) had been implemented through news papers and other so-called "standard quality" publishing with writers who were given fantastic images and titles to impress others.

Their writing technique would first explain the resolution which will be followed by few assumptions. Through assumptions, they created theories.

We don't treat these figures whether Muhammad s.a.w, celestial angels, prophets like Jesus a.s or Moses a.s and good people of the past like our schoolmates, buddies nor parents like in the West. We have 'respect' traditions in the East where manners and politeness is the most important thing as a mean to respect the soul within physical bodies of everyone. In Western world perhaps, people can call their dad or mum with their name. In Eastern part of the world, we respect them with titles. It is the same from Japan to Middle East and degree of politeness decreases as far as the sun sunken. Western thought indeed had entered educational institutions even in Malaysia. I still remember a leader had said that those religious studies students could be nothing in the future rather than being coconut graters in the village and later burdening the government. As the reslut, many religious studies students feel disgusted of themselves and for my case, I had fought teachers and seriously turned to Buddhism at that time shortly before I shifted to a technical school in Kajang. We are the products of those educational system which looks at material as a benchmark for development and not of soul based : )

Now... brothers and sisters that I love the most. This is how those "scholars" in the net work too. If we wanted people to live a noble life. We do not talk evil about others nor slandering because only people with evil mind will do that. This is not from Islamic teachings but from Buddhism teaching. I am actually more proficient in Buddhism and Brahmanism teaching compared to the religion of my ancestors which is Islam. Usually when I talk about these two traditions of philosophy from Indian sub-continent, I would treat them with respect, unlike those pastors nor hateful atheists because I was also once an atheist. Buddhists are atheist Hindus : )

End for this part, 9th of Zulhijjah 1432 wishing the Lord to bless creatures and universe with His boundless Mercy, Peace, and Love in this period near Resurrection, amin!
