I am sure everyone knows what is philosophy. In Arabic, we call this subject matter as falsafah which refers to the love of wisdom or the seeker of the gnosis. The origin of this word is from Greek word which sounds like "Philosophia". The precise meaning of the word is still obscure. Generally, it refers to theory or the process related to human intellectual activity. The first notion regarding this particular term was ascribed to Pythagoras.
Techmann and Evans (1999) in the Philosophy: A Beginner's Guide said that philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge and science, values, reason, mind and language. The aim of philosophical inquiry is to gain insight into questions about knowledge, truth, reason, reality, meaning, mind and value. Other human endeavors explore aspects of these same questions, not least art and literature, but is is philosophy that mounts a direct assault upon them (Grayling, 1999). It distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument (Quinton, 1995). In simple words, it may refer to the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.
It is a very broad field and some more divided into other sub-fields including epistemology, logic, metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics.
